Daft Punk and Star Wars Universe

Episode I – Au commencement

Tout a démarré en Avril 2001 avec des clichés pris par le photographe Jerome Albertini pour le magazine MIXER et la promotion de leur deuxième album Discovery. Les lecteurs ont donc pu apercevoir les Daft Punk à genoux, encerclés par quelques Stormtroopers armés (de la première trilogie). Pourquoi des protagonistes du côté obscur de la saga Star Wars sont présents sur ces photos? Un désir de leur part car ils sont fans? Plutôt pour souligner leur nouvelle aspect visuel futuriste avec une saga réputée pour ses nombreux droïdes, cyborgs ou tout type de robots. En tout cas dans l’article, pas un mot sur la guerre des étoiles. Petite anecdote, pendant notre passage à Cannes pour la promotion d’Electroma ou nous étions invités par Pedro Winter et les robots, lors d’une conversation à propos des figurines Daft Punk RAH version HAA (voir notre interview ici), Thomas Bangalter comparait sans cesse leurs statuettes à leur effigie avec celles de George Lucas. Nous savons très bien que ce qu’il se passe(ait) au Skywalker Ranch est une grande inspiration pour leur carrière. Voyez par vous-même ici leur passage sur le magazine!

All started in April 2001 with pictures taken by the photographer ‘Jerome Albertini‘ for MIXER magazine and the promotion of their second album Discovery. The readers were able to see Daft Punk on their knees, surrounded by some armed Stormtroopers (from the first trilogy). Why some dark side protagonists of Star Wars saga are present into these photos? A desire from them because they’re fans? Rather to support their futuristic new visual appearance with movies renowned for many droids, cyborgs or any type of robots. Anyway in the article, there’s no words about Star Wars. Anecdote, during our visit at Cannes (South of France) to promote Electroma movie, we were invited by Pedro Winter and the robots and then in a conversation (see our interview here) about Daft Punk RAH figures of HAA versions, Thomas Bangalter has compared many times their statuettes with those of George Lucas. Episode II – La cantina Adidas

En Juin 2010, pour célébrer leur collaboration avec Lucasfilm et la campagne Tastemaker pendant la Coupe du Monde de la FIFA 2010, la marque Adidas s’est offert une publicité d’exception. En effet, la société de George Lucas a donné son feu vert pour modifier une scène cruciale de l’épisode 4 de Star Wars, spécifiquement à la Cantina de Mos Eisley sur Tatooine. Avec une technique de calque vidéo (Adobe After Effects), des personnages ont été remplacés par d’autres et attention, les Daft Punk sont suivis de David Beckham, Snoop Dogg, Franz Beckenbauer, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Ciara, Jay Baruchel, DJ Neil Armstrong… Comme s’ils avaient vraiment participé au film aux côtés de personnages emblématiques tels que Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Chewbacca, C-3P0 et R2-D2. Du très bon travail, ultra bluffant et dont tout le monde se souvient encore.

Indeed, the George Lucas company has given the green light to change a crucial scene of the Episode IV of Star Wars, specifically at the Cantina of Mos Eisley in Tatooine. Episode III – Grammy Troopers

Alors que tout le monde savait que les Daft Punk allaient participer aux Grammy Awards 2014 (sans savoir qu’ils allaient tout rafler) pour leur album Random Access Memories et le single Get Lucky, le compte Twitter officiel de Star Wars a divulgué quelque chose de vraiment étonnant pendant les répétitions : Nous sommes debout toute la nuit pour choper les rebelles. #DaftPunk vont enfiler de nouveaux casques aux @TheGRAMMYs.

Après quelques instants, le tweet a disparu et tout le monde a automatiquement pensé que Thomas Bangalter et Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo allaient apparaître avec des costumes de StormTroopers dernière génération pendant leur show avec Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams et Nile Rodgers. En fait, ils sont apparus avec des costumes et casques entièrement blancs, rappelant fortement les troupes de l’empire. Il s’est avéré par la suite qu’ils avaient des casques de Stormtroopers pendant les répétions.

While everyone knew that Daft Punk would participate to the Grammy Awards of 2014 (not knowing that they were going to kick ass) for their album Random Access Memories and the single Get Lucky, the official Twitter account of Star Wars has disclosed something really amazing during rehearsals: We’re up all nights to get Rebels. #DaftPunk to don some new helmets at @TheGRAMMYs. strw.rs/1hUftdo.

After a while, the tweet is gone and everyone automatically thought that Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo would appear with latest Stormtroopers suits and helmets during their show with Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. In fact, they appeared with suits and helmets, all-white. Strongly recalling the troops of the dark side empire. It turned out later that they had Stormtroopers helmets during rehearsals.

Episode IV – Un nouvel espoir

Nous pensons fermement qu’ils pourraient rejoindre un futur épisode de la grande saga qui nous attend à partir du 18 Décembre, sortie de Star Wars 7 – Le réveil de la Force. Ayant déjà composé pour Walt Disney Records (Tron), une collaboration avec le grand John Williams serait juste logique pour la bande originale, tout comme une apparition succincte (comme la scène Club dans TRON) équipés en chasseur de prime (cousins de Booba Fett) avec des casques du style Discovery aux couleurs de l’empire noir ou en maîtres Jedi lumineux. Sachant que Joseph Kosinski (réalisateur de TRON Legacy) a remarqué les Daft Punk et leurs costumes LED après avoir vu un Alive 2007 pendant le rappel, nous croisons les doigts que J.J. Abrams (Jeffrey Jacob Abrams) ou les autres futurs réalisateurs des prochains Star Wars (et spin-off) les ont remarqués pendant le show des Grammys.

A partir de cette hypothèse, nous avons fait un petit montage pour honorer l’idée (en bas). Il ne reste plus qu’à croiser les doigts mais nous restons confiant sur le fait que vous n’avez pas fini de voir les musiciens liés à l’univers des films. Sans parler des nombreux Tshirts officiels Star Wars (par CELIO) qui se référent à la pochette de l’album RAM. Du côté Daft, il y a aussi l’affiche du single Lose Yourself to Dance, très inspiré graphiquement par le peintre Drew Struzan, illustrateur officiel de la franchise Star Wars. Concernant Star Wars 7, nous doutons que les robots fassent parti du projet, après rien n’est impossible avec une annonce de dernière minute. A noter qu’un clip Darth Punk – The Funk Awakens est sorti très récemment mettant en scène des cosplays mi-StarWars, mi-DaftPunk. Aller fingers crossed!

We firmly believe that they could participate to a future episode of the saga that lies ahead from December 18, with Star Wars – The Force Awakens. Having already composed for Walt Disney Records (TRON), a collaboration with the master John Williams would be just logical for the soundtrack, as a brief appearance (like the club scene of TRON) dressed as bounty hunters (​​Booba Fett cousins) with Discovery style helmets of the dark empire or bright Jedi Masters. Knowing that Joseph Kosinski (TRON Legacy director) noticed Daft Punk and their LED suits after seeing Alive 2007 during the recall, we cross our fingers that J.J. Abrams (Jeffrey Jacob Abrams) or other future filmmakers of the next Star Wars (and spin-off) have noticed them during the show of the Grammys.

From this hypothesis, we made a little montage to honor the idea (below). It remains only to cross our fingers but we remain confident about the fact that the musicians will be associated with the world of that saga very soon. Without mention the many official Star Wars Tshirts (by CELIO) which refer to the cover of the album RAM. From the Daft Side, there’s also the poster of the single Lose Yourself to Dance, graphically inspired by the artist Drew Struzan, official illustrator of the Star Wars franchise. Regarding Star Wars 7, we doubt that the robots will participate to the project, but nothing is impossible with an announcement last minute. Note that a video clip named Darth Punk – The Funk Awakens was released recently by implementing cosplays mid-StarWars, mid-DaftPunk. So, with us, fingers crossed!
