Daft Punk, Skrillex, deadmau5 and more to be reworked into classical music

Orchestral covers of electronic music are becoming increasingly popular. From Darude’s “Sandstorm” getting a classical makeover from the Sydney Youth Orchestra, to Above & Beyond and the immense success of their two Acoustic albums and subsequent tours, there’s a growing market for the genre. Swedish composer Hans Ek has now chosen to honor this adored trend, recruiting the Stockholm Philharmonic to assist him in creating Dance Music Symphony.

The 17-track album will cover classics from Daft Punk, Knife Party, Skrillex, Faithless, and more. Ek explained his creative process as sifting through multitudes of electronic productions, many of which already include a considerable orchestral presence, and selecting the ones best suited for a “symphonic remix.” For example, he says, “Daft Punk’s ‘Aerodynamic’ had elements of Vivaldi and Prokofiev.”

Dance Music Symphony will debut on July 2 during the Bråvalla Festival in Sweden, where the Norrköping orchestra will be performing live renditions from the album.
